Last time I told you how after lengthy search I applied with an SL Modeling Agency that I thought was the answer to my dreams. They had it all: good marketing, an impressive facility and RL agency experience. They touted their success, both in and off world. They would promote me throughout SL with their extensive network of clients: shop owners, designers, magazine editors, and event coordinators. Sounded like music to my ears. Where do I sign, I asked, and what’s next?
The first step was to pay their application fee of several thousand L$. Following that, I’d be booked for an agency photo session. They’d use my image in their marketing materials and promote me throughout SL.
I asked what I needed to do to prepare for the photo shoot. “Wear something nice,” I was told. Nice? Nice what? Formal, Casual, Swimsuit? “It might be good to have a couple changes ready” was the reply. (I didn’t know it at the time but that brief exchange of money and questions was the full, complete and total Model preparation that the agency provided me). When will my photo session take place? I asked. “We’ll schedule it and contact you” was the reply.
So, with a diminished L$ account and stars in my eyes, I left. I figured it would be a day or so before I heard back regarding my photo session. So, I waited. And waited. A couple days turned into four, then five. Must be busy, I surmised. So, I waited some more. After a week, I went back to the agency. Nobody was there. IM links for the owners indicated they were off-line. So, I left a message inquiring about my session. I left and waited for a reply. And waited.
One week turned into two. I finally wrote and said I wanted my money back. A rapid response followed. It was full of apology and excuses. They were oh so busy in RL with planning and events. Fine, but why not tell me about that two weeks ago instead of keeping me waiting? The photo session was booked.
With several outfit changes in hand, I arrived the next day for my sitting. There was an N30 photo studio we’ve all become so familiar with. Several shots were taken with three changes of clothes. I was presented with a photo poster (with the agency’s name far more prominent than mine), a group tag identifying me as one of their Models and an offer to purchase copies of the shots for L$200 each. (my vanity made me buy them). Congrats, you’re an agency Model….we’ll contact you with job opportunities.
I’d like to tell you that offers for work came pouring in after signing with the agency. But alas, I can’t. The agency’s marketing and promotion turned out to be a Models photo book made available to anyone who came by their office. In the months that have followed, I have received a grand total of one (1) communication from the agency. And that was a solicitation for funds so they could expand!
Well, I was several thousand L$ poorer, still lacking knowledge, direction or advice. However, I did start getting some work as a Model. But, that’s another story. I’ll tell you about it next time
thanks Kylie
