Could you imagine a world where everyone looks the same, acts the same, and thinks the same? Where there are no differences of opinion, no striations in belief, no deviations from tradition. I know. Hard to imagine a world such as this.
But stop and take a look at the world for what it truly is. Can you see it? Perhaps not. The ripples are subtle, and it takes a keen eye to see where the currents are flowing. But I see. I see all too clearly, and it frightens me.
How the world seems to be flowing to the same tidal pool. The fish are all swimming in the same direction. Even the Salmon are now jumping downstream instead of up. It is just an example of how the Freedom of Expression is being quashed before our very eyes, and everyone is just allowing it to run its course.
How many times have you woken up, gotten dressed for the day, feeling good about yourself, only to step outside into the world and have someone hurl a snide remark about your shoes not matching your shirt, or your skirt being a bit too long? Then you run back home and change your shoes so that they do 'match.' How many moments have you stood in a crowd wondering why you wore those jeans when everyone else is wearing ball gowns and stilettos? Or why you are wearing your glasses that you love, when you should have put in your contacts?
See? You are second guessing yourself. Trying to 'blend in' so that you don't draw attention to yourself. Needing so desperately to fit into someone else's ideal of what you should be, instead of being who you want to be, which ultimately is, yourself. The Freedom of Expression seems not to be a freedom anymore, rather it is more like a luxury for an elite few who dictate the course of fashion. And the sad thing is, we give power to these elitists, we stroke their egos, we give rise to their bloated heads. Who are these power figures that we emulate, that we listen to? What are their credentials? Why do their opinions carry more weight than our own?
Do you see the folly in all this? That you are allowing someone else to pick your personality and your self-expression apart until you are no longer yourself, but merely a representation of what 'they' believe you ought to be. Are you truly happy now? Now that you fit in? Now that you have put aside all of your favorite shirts, ties, shoes and replaced them with 'safer' articles?
Wake up! See the world for what it truly is, and you will see that you are only encouraging the flow of the current. You are not truly living at all. True happiness comes with a price and yes, that price is heavy, but if you are willing to swallow your pride and believe in yourself, disregard those snide comments around you, and live the way you choose to live, you will find happiness. It comes when you realize that you have the Freedom to express yourself the way you choose to, and no one can take that away from you unless you let them.
So wear those shoes that don't match your shirt. Sport that crazy frizzy hair do that makes you giggle. Don't listen to these Fashion elitists who say you are a 'fashion disaster.' Who are they anyway. Wear what makes you happy, and screw what everyone else thinks. Life is too short not to be happy, and you never will be happy until you return to your roots and flow true to YOUR own current, which in some cases will be upstream.
