There has been a lot of talk the past few years about 'cloning'. Scientists have cloned a sheep, they have cloned vegetables, they have even cloned a human now so I have heard. And they are celebrating. Celebrating because they are able to take something and make what they feel is an 'exact' replication of that same object. Eureka! It's going to change life as we know it.
Pretty soon we are all going to be walking around with the same color eyes, the same types of noses, the same lips, and the same body shape. And then we will be accepted as 'cool' and we will be famous. Because then we will not stand out, because then we will look just like everyone else. Who needs to be an individual? Being an individual is SOOOO overrated. Let's just all look the same, act the same, and be clones of each other. That is the future, and it is coming....
Oh wait! What am I talking about? That is old news. It has already happened. I am behind the times.
One such incident happened to me recently in fact. Imagine me, the girl who not only supports, but campaigns for creativity and inviduality in a world where most people cave in and 'go with the flow', not because they like their new 'cloned' self, but because they need everyone else's approval in order to feel good about themselves. I almost fell into the 'cloning' trap. I almost listened to all the 'blah blah blah' they were telling me about how I need to change this, get this skin, get this shape, and then I will be 'gorgeous'.
I listened to what they had to say, I bought the skin, I bought the shape. And guess what? I didn't feel gorgeous at all. I only felt like I was pretending to be someone I really didn't want to be in the first place. And when I looked at myself, I didn't find one part of myself that I liked. Because I was not myself anymore. I was them. I fit their idea of beauty, and when I thought about it, I came to this conclusion....."Who are they anyways?"
The idea here being, that if you let them poke and prod you, if you don't stand up for who you are, they will get to you too. They will change everything that is unique and individual about yourself. They will turn you into 'their' idea of beauty. And you know what? You will end up looking like everyone else out there. Just another clone. Sure, you will be accepted into 'their' group and you will be in 'their' league finally, but when 'they' are gone and you are all alone, how cool are you going to feel then?
So screw what people tell you about how if you change this and this and that about yourself you will be 'gorgeous.' Don't change a thing. Your real friends love you for the unique person that you are. With your 'uncool' eyes, skin, shape, and hair. Yes, those. You are gorgeous just like that. And when all is said and done, sure you may not be in anyone's magazine, or walk in any fashion shows, but look at all that you will have. You will have your self-respect, your pride, and know that you are not a coward who is just another clone.
